The purpose of this qualification is to provide the health sector industry and massage therapy profession with people who can provide remedial massage services. Graduates will be able to work within the Massage New Zealand Scope of Practice defined by Remedial Massage. Graduates will be able to assess, plan, implement and evaluate remedial massage therapy interventions to address musculoskeletal dysfunction. The NZCCM massage programme is an exciting mix of hybrid delivery with a flexible, practice-based schedule of F2F and online sessions, and block course learning. With purpose-built clinics, and supervision for workplace integrated learning, our programme develops a community of practitioners. We equip graduates to enter the profession with a strong understanding of MANZ Scope of Practice for wellness and relaxation massage. Courses include massage practice techniques; anatomy, physiology foundations, and neuro-musculoskeletal anatomy; healthcare programming for stress and wellness interventions; supervised clinic practice; client education equity and diversity; movement integration; business skills; and specialist topics. Bachelor of Therapeutic and Sport Massage (BTSM) Year 1/NZ Diploma in Wellness and Relaxation Massage (Level 5)

Gaining this qualification will provide the health sector industry and massage therapy profession with people who can provide wellness and relaxation massage services. 

• Graduates will be able to work within the Massage New Zealand Scope of Practice Wellness and Relaxation Massage
• Graduates will communicate with and refer to remedial massage therapists, allied health professionals, wellness and medical professional for those specialist services
• Graduates will be able to work independently or as part of a multidisciplinary setting. 

This course is taught using a mix of online classes for the theoretical papers, and face to classes on the Invercargill campus for the practical components.

Course outline

Graduates of The New Zealand Diploma in Wellness and Relaxation Massage (Level 5) is the entry level qualification required to start your career in the massage industry or to progress to a higher qualification.

You will develop a base knowledge and develop professional skills required. This qualification is well regarded by employers in the Massage Industry.

Graduates will:

• Implement professional and ethical standards through effective client relationship skills to offer inclusive, culturally responsive, person centered, safe practice
• Apply knowledge of anatomy and physiology (human functioning) relevant to wellness and relaxation massage to meet client needs
• Apply knowledge of wellness and relaxation massage and other methods within breadth of practice to develop and manage client specific sessions plans
• Perform wellness and relaxation massage and other methods within the breadth of practice to develop and manage client specific sessions plans
• Apply a range of self-management and client service knowledge and skills to meet wellness and relaxation massage client and industry requirements

Bachelor of Therapeutic and Sport Massage (BTSM) Year 2/NZ Diploma in Remedial Massage (Level 6)

• Graduates of this programme will be able to work within the Massage Aotearoa New Zealand Scope of Practice that defines Remedial Massage.
• Graduates will also learn to communicate with and refer to, allied health professionals, wellness, and medical professionals for those specialist services.

Graduates will be capable of working independently or within a multidisciplinary clinical setting.

SIT offers this course in aHyFlex ('Hybrid-Flexible') format, blending face-to-face and online learning for added flexibility. Teaching occurs using a mix of online learning, practical experience, and traditional classroom teaching during compulsory block courses in Invercargill.

HyFlex delivery allows students the flexibility to remain in their hometown massage therapy clinics and communities. There is an opportunity to study full-time or part-time within this programme. 

Course Outline

Graduates of the New Zealand Diploma in Remedial Massage (Level 6) will be able to:

• Provide inclusive, culturally responsive, person-centred, safe practice using client-centred therapeutic relationship skills and meeting professional and ethical standards.
• Analyse and apply anatomy and physiology knowledge relevant to remedial massage to meet client specific needs.
• Evaluate, select and apply remedial massage protocols within scope of practice to solve client specific issues.

Evaluate, select and apply a range of self-management and client service knowledge and skills to meet remedial massage client and industry requirements.

Bachelor of Therapeutic & Sports Massage Degree (BTSM)

Year 3 of the Bachelor of Therapeutic and Sports Massage degree programme increases massage therapists' knowledge and skills, extending their ability in critical/professional/clinical reasoning to manage complex soft tissue rehabilitation. After successful completion of the Diploma L6 or the BTSM year 2, students can apply to enrol in to year 3 of the BTSM.

Graduates are critical thinking, reflective practitioners with technical and professional competence, sound reasoning and research literacy. They have a capacity to manage knowledge and its acquisition during their working lives. Course covers: Research and Advanced Professional Development, Advanced Clinical Reasoning and Clinical Practice III, Advanced Professional Studies, Therapeutics III.
