"In the late 1970’s I engaged with allied health practitioners as I’d always had an interest in natural healing modalities. Before leaving for UK/Europe in 1982 I did some basic massage training with a naturopath, with a view to changing my career path. After returning with my London qualification, I established a clinic in 1985 and obtained inspiration and experience with Bill Wareham and other well-known sports gyms, a private health farm, attended the Commonwealth Games in 1990, provided home/hotel visits by referral. This led to a desire to train as a Regd. Comprehensive Nurse in 1992-94, to support my understanding of the conditions I encountered."
"In London 1982-84, I obtained qualifications via the International Therapy Examination Council. On my return to NZ, I was accepted as a Registered Professional Member with NZATMP in 1990 then later as an RMT and completed a Diploma of Nursing in 1994. I have continued my learning with various trainers including the NZ College of Massage and conference workshops with NZATMP/TMA/MNZ/MANZ. "

"Professionalism, which is important for massage therapy to be taken seriously and encompasses the other values for practicing ethically, respectfully, competently and with cultural awareness."

"As a Registered Nurse with the NZ Nursing Council, I have always felt it was important to be represented by an association providing governance and accountability. MANZ provides networking and educational opportunities, standards and guidance."

"An ability to listen reflectively and seek feedback, provide good assessment and appropriate technique, enjoy networking and be able to embrace the challenges of self-employment."

"Massage has become more acceptable as a therapy due to improved public education, industry promotion, professional engagement and more evidence-based publications."

"They may consider it a luxury rather than part of a regular relaxation or treatment plan. Some believe that all therapists have the same training/standards, so don’t check on qualifications or clarify details of the service offered."

"By listening to their concerns and defining goals to provide a reliable, safe service for a fair price, based on ethical considerations and practice. "

"I really enjoy working in a helping profession with mutual exchange, observing client satisfaction and receiving feedback for improvement, having the freedom of self-employment whilst connected to a multidisciplinary team."

"Invest in sound training and accept that it takes time to build a client base sufficient to earn a living. Maintain self-care, enthusiasm and anticipate how self-employment may determine lifestyle."
